ISO 45001 Occupational health and safety management systems – Requirements with guidance for use (ISO 45001:2018)

Category of the Standard:

Occupational health and safety management systems

Short Description:

This document specifies requirements for an occupational safety and health (OSH) management system and provides guidance for its use, to enable organisations to provide safe and healthy workplaces by preventing work-related injuries and health impairment, as well as proactively improving their OSH performance. This document is applicable to any organisation that wishes to establish, implement and maintain an OSH management system to improve occupational safety and health, eliminate hazards and minimise OSH risks (including system deficiencies), take advantage of OSH opportunities and address OSH management system nonconformities associated with its activities. This document helps an organisation to achieve the intended outcomes of its OSH management system. Consistent with the organisation’s OSH policy, the intended outcomes of an OSH management system include:

(a) continuous improvement of OSH performance;
(b) compliance with legal and other requirements;
(c) achievement of OSH objectives.

This document is applicable to any organisation regardless of its size, type and activities. It is applicable to OSH risks under the control of the organisation, taking into account factors such as the context in which the organisation operates and the needs and expectations of its workers and other interested parties. This document does not establish specific criteria for OSH performance, nor for the design of an OSH management system. This document enables an organisation, through its OSH management system, to integrate other aspects of safety and health, such as worker well-being. This document does not address issues such as product safety, property damage or environmental impacts beyond the risks to workers and other relevant stakeholders. This document may be used in whole or in part to systematically improve occupational safety and health management. However, statements of conformity with this document are not acceptable unless all its requirements are incorporated into an organisation’s OSH management system and are complied with without exclusion.

Relation to the Industry 5.0:

Often the customers themselves require compliance with certain regulations such as this one, which is also integrated into a complete management system and which is also passed on to our suppliers, and which are closely related to Industry 5.0. 3 Many of the concepts related to Industry 5.0 are already included in the internal management of the company under these standards, although we are considering extending them with the ideas of this project, as options for improvement. In some cases, there are already indicators for monitoring the company’s objectives and goals, which coincide with the three main lines of action of this project. All of this orients the company towards an operation and management that leads to continuous improvement in various aspects:

– Within the group of ‘Human Centricity’ KPIs are already considered within ISO 45001 (Safety). Aspects centred on people (their well-being, safety, training, etc.).

Short Description:

This International Standard specifies requirements for an environmental management system that an organisation can use to improve its environmental performance. This International Standard is intended for use by an organisation seeking to manage its environmental responsibilities in a systematic way that contributes to the environmental pillar of sustainability. This International Standard helps an organisation to achieve the intended results of its environmental management system, thereby providing value to the environment, the organisation itself and its stakeholders. Consistent with the organisation’s environmental policy, the intended outcomes of an environmental management system include:

– improvement of environmental performance;
– compliance with legal and other requirements;
– achievement of environmental objectives.

This International Standard is applicable to any organisation, irrespective of its size, type and nature, and applies to the environmental aspects of its activities, products and services that the organisation determines it can control or influence, taking a life cycle perspective. This International Standard does not establish specific environmental performance criteria. This International Standard can be used in whole or in part to systematically improve environmental management. However, claims of conformity to this International Standard are not acceptable unless all requirements are incorporated into an organisation’s environmental management system, and are met without exclusions.

Circular Economy – organizational level

Short Description:

ISO 59020 sets forth requirements and guidance for organizations to measure and assess their circularity performance within defined economic systems. This document aims to standardize the process by which organizations collect and calculate data using mandatory and optional circularity indicators, ensuring consistent and verifiable results. It provides a structured framework for setting system boundaries, selecting appropriate indicators, and interpreting data to evaluate the circularity performance at multiple levels—from regional and inter-organizational to organizational and product-specific levels* .

Relation to the Industry 5.0:

ISO 59020 is crucial in evaluating environmental sustainability and supporting SDGs (Sustainability Development Goals). It helps to quantify and demonstrate the progress in sustainable practices through a methodology for measuring and assessing circularity performance. Therefore, ISO 59020 enhances transparency and stakeholder trust about environmental sustainability improvements at organization level

The digital transformation can benefit industry in many ways, from increasing efficiency to
enabling growth. Standards play a crucial role in shaping the digital transformation process,
as they provide a common framework for digital technology applications.

Digital Transition is an opportunity for Europe to boost its competitiveness in global markets. European Standards play a key role in this ambition, seeing as they:

promote security and safety for products and services

build trust in emerging technologies

work to find consensus and enable state of the art solutions for Europe

The term Industry 4.0 was publicly introduced in 2011 at the Hannover Fair, Germany. Since them new synonyms were deployed such as Industrial Internet of Things or Smart Manufacturing. Almost ten years later, the term Industry 5.0 was created. It places the wellbeing of the worker at the centre of the production process and uses new technologies to provide prosperity beyond jobs and growth while respecting the production limits of the planet. It complements the existing “Industry 4.0” approach by specifically putting research and innovation at the service of the transition to a sustainable, human-centric and resilient European industry.

In a joint effort the International Organization for Standardization ISO and the International Electrotechnical Commission IEC defined Smart Manufacturing as Manufacturing that improves its performance aspects with integrated and intelligent use of processes and resources in cyber, physical and human spheres to create and deliver products and services, which also collaborates with other domains within enterprises’ value chains. Performance aspects include agility, efficiency, safety, security, sustainability or any other performance indicators identified by the enterprise. In addition to manufacturing, other enterprise domains can include engineering, logistics, marketing, procurement, sales or any other domains identified by the enterprise.

Given the complexity of intelligent manufacturing, there are numerous standards in this area, including standards for cybersecurity, interoperability, data exchange and advanced manufacturing. In ISO/IEC TR 63306-2, Smart Manufacturing Standards Map (SM2), Catalogue lists smart manufacturing related standards with their characteristics as specified in ISO/IEC TR 63306-1 SM2 Framework. ISO/IEC TR 63306-2 Catalogue consists of two elements: The document which describes the ISO/IEC TR 63306-2 Catalogue and provides the URL for each of the ISO and IEC repositories which contain the SM2 Catalogue. The actual information about the smart manufacturing related standards (list and characteristics) which is found in both ISO and IEC repositories. The SM2 Catalogue applies to international standards, de facto standards and consortium specifications; publications or projects; thereafter named “standards”. ISO/IEC TR 63306-2 is intended for SM2 Catalogue users.

Other documents are provided to SM2 Catalogue contain managers. This comprehensive catalogue can be downloaded from here.
