The 4th industrial revolution, Industry 4.0, has transformed traditional industries with new technologies. However, the pursuit of competitiveness has overshadowed concerns for sustainability and human capital. The VUCA environment, marked by disruptions like Covid19 and geopolitical wars, highlights the need for agility and flexibility. To address these issues, the concept of Industry 5.0 emerges, focusing on sustainability, resilience, and people-centricity.

This article explores how digitalization can enhance the three pillars of Industry 5.0, specifically analysing the implementation of condition monitoring technologies in a PROSPECTS 5.0 use case. The goal is to improve industry’s overall efficiency and responsiveness.

Condition monitoring, a technique used to track the operating conditions of equipment, has played a vital role in improving productivity, reliability, and operational safety across various industries. As Industry 4.0 continues to evolve, condition monitoring has become a key technology, leveraging advancements in IoT, machine-to-machine communication, and smart sensors. However, its impact on Industry 5.0, which prioritizes sustainability, resilience, and human-centricity, is worth analysing.

In terms of resilience, condition monitoring enables the anticipation of breakdowns and disruptions, but it requires a contingency plan to be fully effective. For sustainability, condition monitoring can help evaluate energy efficiency and identify excessive energy consumption. Moreover, it can be used to analyse the lifecycle of components, supporting predictive analysis and eco-design*.

Regarding human-centricity, the integration of condition monitoring techniques can be a key aspect of a people-focused strategy, essential for innovation, performance, and talent retention. It is crucial to involve all employees in the implementation and use of condition monitoring techniques, explaining the benefits and steps involved. This approach not only avoids resistance to technology but also fosters an environment where employees feel valued and listened to. By prioritizing the safety and well-being of employees, condition monitoring can put people at the centre of Industry 5.0** . By exploring the intersection of condition monitoring and Industry 5.0, organizations can unlock new opportunities for growth, innovation, and sustainability, while prioritizing the needs and well-being of their employees***.

Thanks to PROSPECTS 5.0 project, this discussion can be more tangible through the experience of one of the use cases focused on crane engineering services. This organization has implemented condition monitoring technologies through two different projects carried out together with a research centre****.

From their point of view, Condition monitoring is an excellent example of how these technologies can boost productivity while aligning with the pillars of Industry 5.0.

Resilience in projects can be achieved through condition monitoring, which enables the ability to adapt quickly to changes and mitigate the effects of unexpected failures. This is achieved by collecting real-time operating data, generating predictive models, and establishing preventive plans to minimize operational stoppages. Additionally, implementing redundant sensors ensures that operations are not compromised in the event of system failures, guaranteeing data availability. By defining contingency plans that can be executed automatically when failures are detected, safe operations can be maintained, ultimately strengthening the resilience of the system.

Digitalization can significantly improve energy efficiency, a key pillar of sustainability, through condition monitoring and predictive maintenance. Smart sensors detect faults and monitor energy consumption, while artificial intelligence analyses data to propose operational adjustments that minimize energy consumption. Predictive maintenance reduces equipment replacement, unplanned repairs, and periodic inspections, thereby decreasing material and energy consumption. Machine learning algorithms based on realtime sensor data predict future failures, enabling proactive decision-making and strengthening resilience. Additionally, integrating renewable energy sources, such as solar panels, can further reduce reliance on traditional energy sources, lowering emissions and carbon footprint.

Digitalization enables not only improved efficiency and resilience but also more sustainable practices, such as eco-design. By predicting failures, maintenance can be scheduled efficiently, reducing crane downtime and operating costs. The collected data can be used to improve future designs, reducing material usage and increasing durability, thereby positively impacting the product’s life cycle. Additionally, digitalization allows for the use of 3D printing techniques and Finite Element analysis to create customized and sustainable designs. The data also facilitates the identification of frequently failing elements, enabling redesign and incorporation of circular design principles, such as recycling and reuse, to create more sustainable products.

Last but not least, involving employees in the adoption of new technologies is crucial for a successful transition to Industry 5.0. By engaging employees in the use of technologies such as IoT monitoring and artificial intelligence, they can confidently and effectively utilize these tools, empowering them to participate in continuous improvement. Predictive maintenance platforms simplify management and monitoring, reducing workload and allowing workers to focus on strategic tasks. Intuitive and accessible interfaces, including visual and audible alerts, enable rapid decision-making and enhance productivity and safety. A collaborative culture between operators and digital systems, where predictive analytics and data support human decision-making, is key to achieving both efficiency and safety goals, ultimately creating a safer and more efficient working environment.

The future of this project holds great potential for innovation, with a focus on integrating autonomous maintenance and operation systems, where cranes can self-manage their maintenance processes through artificial intelligence. The creation of “digital twins” will also enable the simulation of crane behaviour, allowing for the prediction of failures and improvements before they occur in the real world. To achieve this, future needs include increased connectivity through 5G, which will enable real-time communication of high volumes of data, and advancements in artificial intelligence for predictive analytics, leading to more accurate detection of potential failures and optimization of the entire crane lifecycle.

To conclude, digitization can be fully aligned with Industry 5.0 pillars improving operational resilience, energy efficiency and empowering people through new technologies. Digitization is already playing a crucial role in the evolution of industry towards a more sustainable, resilient and human-centric model, as can be seen in this use case.

In the automotive industry, Industry 5.0 is reshaping traditional manufacturing by emphasizing a closer integration of human expertise with advanced technologies. Unlike the automation-dominant Industry 4.0, Industry 5.0 focuses on human-centric innovation, where machines work alongside humans to enhance efficiency, creativity, and precision. The shift towards more sustainable and resilient practices is also crucial, as the automotive sector faces increasing pressure to reduce environmental impact and adapt to changing market demands. By incorporating advanced robotics, artificial intelligence, and human collaboration, Industry 5.0 paves the way for a smarter, greener, and more adaptive automotive manufacturing process.

Industry 5.0 highlights the integration of human skills with advanced technologies. In the automotive industry, human-centricity means that workers are not replaced but supported by collaborative robots (cobots). These robots assist workers with precision tasks, reducing errors and improving safety. For example, PROSPECTS 5.0 showcases how cobots help workers in automotive assembly, allowing real-time control over production, enhancing both flexibility and efficiency (PROSPECTS 5.0) (Research and innovation).

Sustainability is at the core of Industry 5.0. In automotive manufacturing, the shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) exemplifies this focus. AI-powered systems in manufacturing optimize energy use and reduce material waste. For example, the PROSPECTS 5.0 initiative demonstrates how predictive maintenance, using AI, extends the lifespan of vehicle components, leading to significant reductions in waste and resource consumption (PROSPECTS 5.0) (Aeneas).

Resilience is crucial for navigating supply chain disruptions and evolving market conditions. Digital twin technology is a critical tool in Industry 5.0, enabling manufacturers to simulate production and adapt quickly to disruptions. The PROSPECTS 5.0 project has applied digital twins to monitor supply chain fluctuations in the automotive sector, allowing companies to optimize production schedules and avoid costly downtime. (PROSPECTS 5.0) (Research and innovation).

While the automotive industry leads in adopting Industry 5.0 principles, other sectors, such as IT, energy, and aviation, are following. Human-centric AI in IT services supports decisionmaking, while sustainability efforts in energy and aviation focus on reducing carbon footprints. The success of the PROSPECTS 5.0 initiative across various industries highlights the broad applicability of these principles in shaping a resilient, human-centred, and sustainable future (PROSPECTS 5.0)(Research and innovation).

The implementation of Industry 5.0 principles can be examined through the specific example from the PROSPECTS 5.0 project. For example, Teknorot in Türkiye has implemented Industry 5.0 technologies in its production of smart vehicle suspension systems. By integrating advanced data analytics and high traceability systems, Teknorot improves both efficiency and sustainability. This system allows for real-time monitoring of manufacturing processes, enhancing product quality while reducing material waste and energy consumption. Furthermore, the collaboration between human workers and collaborative robots (cobots) ensures that tasks requiring precision are handled efficiently, minimizing errors and improving overall safety on the factory floor (PROSPECTS 5.0)(RWTH Aachen FIR).

This usecase shows how automotive companies can leverage Industry 5.0’s human-centric approach to optimize operations while also making strides toward sustainability

Industry 5.0 is revolutionizing the automotive sector by merging human expertise with cutting-edge technology. Through initiatives like PROSPECTS 5.0, the benefits of AI, cobots, and digital twins are clearly demonstrated in improving efficiency, sustainability, and resilience. The Teknorot case shows how human-machine collaboration enhances production quality while reducing environmental impact. As Industry 5.0 principles spread, other sectors will follow, driving a more adaptive and sustainable future. Ultimately, Industry 5.0 emphasizes that technology should enhance, not replace, human contribution, paving the way for a smarter, greener, and more inclusive industrial landscape

Industry 4.0 saw its limitations when approaching to the textile- and clothing industry. This resource, logistics and labour intense sector struggles with the principles of atomization and technological innovation. Industry 5.0 should help every human being working in this field to relieve the workload and find a balance between hand work and automation. Next to this it encourages the sustainable and circular aspects in sourcing and recycling textile products. Unsing the concept of Industry 5.0 should prepare companies for possible drawbacks and empower them for an uncertain future.

Since the textile and clothing industry is a labour intense segment which needs a lot of human work force human centricity plays an important role to the future of this sector. Companies search for the cheapest work force abroad and once inherent knowledge gets lost in the home countries of such companies. But companies have to see that always searching for a cheaper manufacturer is no option for a long-lasting enterprise. Automation drives forward but the assembling of a garment has its pitfalls. Using a human centric approach leads to the combination of work force and automation. It helps that the work of employees is not that intense anymore, it should be safer and keep their workplace because the machines have to be operated and all this without losing knowledge.

The cultivation of cotton, the converting of woods to viscose and the chemical heavy production of man-made fibres is one of the biggest polluters of the environment in our world. The new strategy of Industry 5.0 is not to foster even more of those raw materials, it is a way to track the consume of resources (e.g. water, chemicals, etc.) and the life cycle of products and even their end-of-life. A holistic view from the beginning of a textile product with all its inputs and the end of a textile product with possible recycle possibilities should help companies creating a circular economy which knows its impact on the planet and is less dependent on it.

Summarizing all this it is clear that Industry 5.0 will not replace Industry 4.0 as its predecessors did with theirs. Industry 5.0 will complete its predecessor. It shifts the focus of ceaseless growth to an approach of binding employees with focusing on their needs and demands, keeping the world a liveable place and improving current matters of pollution, endless waste and an exploitation of resources and establish companies which are persistent and more flexible when it comes to shortages. The current project of prospects 5.0 will help finding KPIs and levers to help every sector, industry and company implementing an Industry 5.0 to withstand the challenges of the future.

The evolution from Industry 1.0 to Industry 5.0 reflects a continuous trajectory of technological innovation and industrial advancement (see Figure 1). Industry 5.0 builds on the foundations laid by Industry 4.0 by integrating the key pillars of human-centricity, sustainability, and resilience. While Industry 4.0 prioritized automation and technological efficiency, Industry 5.0 shifts the focus toward the well-being of workers, aligning technology with human needs, reducing environmental impact, and developing robust systems that can adapt to disruptions and crises (European Commission, 2024). These principles represent a shift toward considering societal and environmental impacts in conjunction with technological advancements (European Commission, 2021). The PROSPECTS 5.0 initiative plays a critical role in driving this transition by exploring how these principles are applied across various sectors and refining our understanding of Industry 5.0.

In Industry 5.0, human well-being and individual needs take centre stage. Production systems are designed to enhance workers’ quality of life and productivity, while also safeguarding fundamental rights such as privacy, autonomy, and dignity. This humancentred approach promotes a fairer and more inclusive working environment by balancing technological advancements with human welfare (European Commission, 2021). Sustainability in Industry 5.0 is focused on establishing circular processes that prioritize the reuse, repurposing, and recycling of natural resources. These efforts aim to reduce waste and mitigate environmental harm. Key strategies include lowering energy consumption and cutting greenhouse gas emissions to prevent resource depletion and environmental degradation. The overarching objective is to create a self-sustaining industrial ecosystem that operates within planetary boundaries. Technologies such as artificial intelligence and additive manufacturing play an essential role in enhancing resource efficiency and minimizing waste, thereby fostering a circular economy and promoting long-term industrial growth (European Commission, 2021, European Commission, 2024).

Resilience is another foundational element of Industry 5.0. It emphasizes the importance of building industrial systems that are adaptable and capable of withstanding various disruptions. This involves creating flexible production systems, resilient supply chains, and adaptable business strategies that can respond effectively to crises such as supply chain breakdowns or economic instability. Recent events, including the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical upheavals, have highlighted the vulnerabilities of globalized industries, especially in critical sectors such as healthcare and national security. By strengthening these areas, Industry 5.0 seeks to ensure that operations remain stable and efficient even in times of crisis (European Commission, 2024).

As the PROSPECTS 5.0 project continues, real-world case studies will provide further insights into how Industry 5.0 principles are being applied across industries. One example already documented is the use of human-centric technologies, such as exoskeletons, in industrial environments. Exoskeletons, as described by Alojaiman (2023), are assistive devices that enhance bodily movements and support various parts of the body, reducing the effort required to lift or move equipment. These devices not only improve workplace safety by reducing the risk of musculoskeletal injuries but also enhance operational efficiency (Alojaiman, 2023). Such case studies deepen our understanding of the Industry 5.0 paradigm, where technology is designed not only to improve efficiency but also to enhance the human experience within production systems.

In conclusion, Industry 5.0 represents a significant evolution in industrial paradigms, with its
focus on human-centricity, sustainability, and resilience. The PROSPECTS 5.0 project offers
valuable insights into how these principles are being practically implemented across
sectors. As Industry 5.0 continues to evolve, its guiding principles will become increasingly
integral to creating a more balanced, equitable, and sustainable industrial landscape.
Ultimately, the future of industry lies not only in technological innovation but also in the
thoughtful integration of human, societal, and environmental considerations.
